Boygenius, one of music’s latest supergroups consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, has just dropped a new EP with 4 tracks. This comes off the tail-end of the massive success that was their first full length album, “The Record”, and deliberately follows the same themes of struggling relationships and accepting one’s imperfect self.
With returning collaborators such as Ethan Gruska and Marshall Vore, the integrity of their gritty production sound remains intact, notably granting equal voice and opportunity for each member to shine. The opening track, ‘Black Hole’, offers a solo Julien Baker who paints a picture of being alone on a dark night before she’s followed up with vocal harmonies Bridgers and Dacus.
The baton is then passed to Lucy Dacus on ‘Afraid of Heights’, where she contemplates taking risks and encountering this in a relationship: “I Know you wanted me to take a risk / Not everybody gets the chance to live a life that isn’t dangerous”. Here, Dacus not only provides solace for people who value a comfortable life, but she criticizes people who glorify a life of senseless thrills and risks for the very sake of danger while others may be forced to live in such reality. And for artists who have such a large platform, I commend them for writing lyrical content that drives listeners to question and reflect on their values while also allowing them to relate to the music.
