On July 7, 2025, Pearl Jam’s powerhouse drummer Matt Cameron announced he was stepping away from the band that became his musical home for nearly three decades. With a simple yet heartfelt statement on the band’s Instagram, Cameron reflected on “27 fantastic years” behind the kit for one of rock’s most enduring acts.
Cameron first rose to prominence as the thunder behind Soundgarden’s riff-heavy onslaught in the late ’80s and early ’90s. When Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, and Jack Irons extended an invitation that would reshape Cameron’s career. He sat in for the Yield tour in 1998 and quickly became a permanent member, bringing his versatile style to Pearl Jam’s evolving sound.
Throughout his tenure, Cameron drummed on every Pearl Jam album from Binaural (2000) to Dark Matter (2024), anchoring the band’s live shows with precision and power. His approach—equal parts finesse and force—helped define Pearl Jam’s mature rock aesthetic, earning him accolades as one of rock’s most respected drummers. His contributions didn’t go unnoticed: Cameron is a two-time Grammy winner and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee with both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
In his farewell message, the 62-year-old rocker thanked Eddie, Stone, Mike, and Jeff “for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter.” He closed with gratitude for “the crew, staff and fans the world over,” calling his time with Pearl Jam “an incredible journey”.
Pearl Jam issued their own tribute:
“Matt has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music.”
Cameron leaves a legacy of thunderous grooves and thoughtful fills—a drumming style shaped by rock, jazz, and progressive influences. While the band’s future without him remains uncertain, fans can look forward to Cameron’s next creative move, whether it’s session work, new collaborations, or perhaps another solo venture. As one chapter closes, Cameron’s steady beat will continue to echo through rock history—and in every drummer he inspired along the way.
