Gary Oldman opened up about his decades-long friendship with the late David Bowie, calling the world a very different place since the music icon’s death in January 2016. In a heartfelt interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Oldman described Bowie as “cosmic glue,” whose presence seemed to hold everything together and when he was gone, “everything fell apart.”

From London Roots to Global Icons: Oldman Remembers Bowie’s Influence

Oldman recalled their early connection, noting how they bonded over similar upbringings in London during the 50s and 60s. Beyond friendship, Bowie’s fearless approach to creativity left a lasting mark on the actor.

“He was always pushing the envelope. He reinvented himself and his music many times,” Oldman said. “He was inspiring because he was a great innovator and not afraid to try things. It’s nothing conscious, but that rubs off.”

Lessons From a Legend: Pushing the Boat Out

One of Bowie’s enduring lessons, according to Oldman, was to “push the boat out”  to venture beyond the safe zone where your feet touch the bottom, and find the space where you can do your best work. Oldman says he’s carried this philosophy with him throughout his career, attributing much of his own evolution as an actor to Bowie’s example.

Exit Stage Left: Bowie’s Legacy Lives On

Even years after his passing, Bowie’s influence remains palpable. Oldman’s reflections underscore the late icon’s unique ability to inspire, innovate, and connect, reminding fans why the world feels emptier without him and why his spirit continues to shape art, music, and culture everywhere.
