How did Miley Cyrus’ Heartbreak Song “Flowers” Break the Spotify Record?

Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet

BRIANNA CAPOZZI

The singer, songwriter, and actress Miley Cyrus has recently released are cord-breaking song called “Flowers” in January 2023. This song recites her10-year long relationship with her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. Not only has the song garnered over 700 million streams on Spotify, but it has also made it into the Guinness World Records for “the most streamed-song in a single week in Spotify history” - Spotify.

After her song “Wrecking Ball” was released in 2013, Cyrus didn’t think she would be writing another hit song that would top the charts. This time around, however, she came back bigger and better. The lyrics in her song “Flowers” have definitely caught everyone’s attention as she alludes that they’re a response to Liam Hemsworth’s song dedication to Cyrus, “When I was your man,” by Bruno Mars. It seems that Cyrus used this opportunity to be inspired by Bruno's lyrics and interpret her feelings in her own way.

NEWSCOM/ZUMA

Miley Cyrus noted that the relationship with Hemsworth was not as glamorous as it seemed and that it had taken a mental toll on her voice after their house in Malibu was affected by the California wildfires in 2018. She incorporated this unfortunate event in the song as well.

Regardless of the trauma and emotional struggles the songstress had been through, she persevered and released countless songs aside from “Flowers,” such as “Plastic Hearts,” “Angels Like You,” and “Prisoner,” featuring Dua Lipa. Cyrus’ world-breaking song of 2023 has shown that she’s more than just “Hannah Montana” and Liam Hemsworth’s ex-wife. She’s really demonstrated that as she continues to grow as a person and in her music.

The most notable lyrics of “Flowers” conveyed confidence and tenacity as she sings:

“I can buy myself flowers

Talk to myself for hours

I can take myself dancing

I can hold my own hand

I can love me better than you can.”

These lyrics had left many fans in awe, showing how powerful and incredible Miley Cyrus is. “Flowers” is not like any other breakup song. Its upbeat tune makes you want to dance and almost literally, “Party in the U.S.A.” The song spoke to a lot of people and inspired millions to not only love themselves more but to recognize your own self-worth.

BRIANNA CAPOZZI

It’s impressive how Miley Cyrus expressed her journey towards self-love ,empowerment, independence and overcoming the hurdles of an unhealthy relationship. This isn’t the first time Cyrus has written a popular heartbreak song, but this song in particular has resonated with many fans and other singer/songwriters who struggle with self-confidence and self-esteem. In fact, it’s amazing what love can do to a person and that’s probably why it became the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in just one week.

If you haven’t listened to the song yet, check out the full video below. You’ll start dancing your happy feet away like Miley Cyrus did in her music video.
